MLB roundup | Friday’s games

AMERICAN LEAGUE

Angels 7, Blue Jays 5

TORONTO

Kendry Morales homered and Jered Weaver continued his mastery over Toronto with seven strong innings. Vernon Wells, Randy Ruiz and Adam Lind homered for Toronto, but it wasn’t enough as Weaver improved to 6-1 with a 2.93 ERA in seven career starts against the Blue Jays. Weaver (2-0) allowed two runs and five hits in seven-plus innings. He walked none and struck out eight. Weaver’s strong outing spoiled Shaun Marcum’s first home start for Toronto since Sept. 16, 2008, when he left two innings into a game against Baltimore with tightness in his forearm. Marcum missed the rest that season and all of 2009 after ligament replacement surgery on his right elbow. Marcum (0-1) allowed four runs and seven hits in seven innings. He walked one and struck out six.

Yankees 5, Rangers 1, 6 innings, rain

NEW YORK

CC Sabathia struck out nine in another dominant performance and New York the sloppy Rangers.

Sabathia (2-0) allowed three hits and walked none in his first complete game of the season. He retired 17 of the last 19 batters he faced after Josh Hamilton’s one-out double in the first, including six consecutive strikeouts. C.J. Wilson (0-1), working on seven days’ rest, also pitched six innings for Texas but was hurt by control problems and first baseman Chris Davis’ throwing error during New York’s three-run fourth.

Rays 1, Red Sox 1, suspended

BOSTON

The game between the Tampa Bay Rays and Boston Red Sox was suspended because of rain with the score tied 1-1 after 81‚Ñ2 innings. It was scheduled to resume before tonight’s scheduled game from the point it was suspended. The Rays scored in the third on Ben Zobrist’s RBI single and the Red Sox tied it in the fifth on Jason Varitek’s third homer — and third hit — of the season. With heavy rain falling and two outs in the top of the ninth, Carlos Pena walked against Jonathan Papelbon and stole second. But B.J. Upton struck out swinging. Then the grounds crew rolled the tarp onto the already soaked field.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Phillies 8, Marlins 6

PHILADELPHIA

Roy Halladay pitched eight strong innings in a soggy home debut and Chase Utley hit his fifth homer in four games. Halladay ended Jorge Cantu’s major league-record streak of 10 games with at least one hit and one RBI, and Dan Uggla hit a solo shot for Florida. Pitching in a steady rain, Halladay (3-0) shrugged off the conditions and allowed two runs and eight hits. He threw 100 pitches, struck out four and didn’t walk a batter.

Cubs 7, Astros 2

CHICAGO

Derrek Lee hit a three-run homer and Carlos Silva pitched seven strong innings, leading the Cubs past the Houston Astros. Ryan Theriot drove in the go-ahead run for the Cubs with a seventh-inning squeeze, and Kosuke Fukudome added a sacrifice fly before Lee capped the six-run inning by hitting Jeff Fulchino’s 3-2 pitch over the left-field wall for his third home run of the season.

Cardinals 4, Mets 3

ST. LOUIS

Felipe Lopez hit a grand slam in the seventh inning to back Chris Carpenter’s sterling outing, and the Cardinals rallied against the New York Mets bullpen before holding on for a victory.

Nationals 5, Brewers 3

WASHINGTON

Adam Kennedy’s two-run single in the eighth inning keyed a three-run rally as the Nationals topped the Milwaukee Brewers. Brian Bruney (1-0), who allowed an unearned run in the top of the eighth to give Milwaukee a temporary 3-2 lead, was the winner.

Braves 9, Rockies 5

ATLANTA

Jason Heyward and Melky Cabrera each had two hits during a seven-run second inning, and the Atlanta Braves cruised past the Colorado Rockies for their third straight win.
