Practice suspended
COLUMBUS
The Ohio Supreme Court has suspended Maureen A. Cronin, a former Mahoning County Common Pleas Court judge, from law practice pending an investigation and disciplinary proceedings by the court’s disciplinary counsel.
Cronin is an inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution in Greenville, Ill., after having been sentenced in federal court to 27 months in prison on two felony counts of honest-services mail fraud. She pleaded guilty to taking an $18,000, no-interest cash loan from Flora Cafaro, a part-owner of the Cafaro Co., a Youngstown-based shopping- mall development company.
She took the money in the back seat of a car and failed to report that loan to the state though numerous civil lawsuits involving the Cafaro Co. were pending before her.
Gun-ban protest
campbell
A rally to protest a gun ban in the city will take place at 2 p.m. today at the city building at 351 Tenney Ave.
The YSU chapter of the Young Americans for Liberty is sponsoring the event. That group protests constitutional violations.
Also expected to participate are members of Ohioans for Concealed Carry, a gun-rights organization.
The gun ban, which the city council passed in January, prohibits all gun sales in the city limits. It was in the process of being amended to allow private sales by residents, prohibiting only retail sales. The amendment was tabled in March after city Law Director Mark Kolmacic told council the ordinance violates state law.
Council is expected to repeal the ordinance at its meeting Wednesday. It intends instead to consider legislation that prohibits gun sales in certain areas through zoning.
