White House crowns apple dessert winners

The second annual White House Fruit Farm Apple Dessert Recipe Contest was held at the Canfield farm market Mar. 27.

First-place winner was Joyce Brooks of Salem for her apple pecan cheesecake.

Gwen Vela of Enon Valley, Pa., took second with her apple caramel walnut pie.

Ginny Perkins of Columbiana was third with her New England apple pudding.

Prizes included apples for a year and White House gift certificates.

All entry fees received were matched by White House Fruit Farm and were presented in the form of a check by White House owner Debbie Pifer to Mike Iberis of Second Harvest Food Bank, along with a donation of 72 bushels of apples.

Entries were judged on appearance, taste and creative use of apples.

Judging the event were Mike Iberis, director of Second Harvest Food Bank; Flora Schneider, Second Harvest Food Bank board Member; Glenn Stevens, WFMJ reporter and morning show cooking segment host; and Regina Reynolds, WFMJ Today cooking segment host.

All the recipes received will be published in an upcoming White House apple cookbook.
