Neighbors | Shaiyla Hakeem .North Elementary students and members of the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley battled the rain Tuesday to be a part of the ribbon cutting ceremony for the schools new arbor. North Elementary cut the green ribbon to their new arbor Tuesday. The project was funded by a grant from the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley (CFMV).

The CFMV was established in 1999 in order to help improve and strengthen the quality of life for residents in Mahoning and Trumbull counties.

The arbor is made of recycled material and will eventually be covered with ivy leaves. Students will be able to eat lunch under the arbor while being protected from harmful sun rays.

“The kids already spend so much time in the greenhouse,” said school principal Michael Masucci. “I wanted them to be able to spend time outside and be protected from the sun.”

The arbor is the most recent addition to the school, but it will not be the last. The school garden will soon feature a pond with fish and a small fountain. Construction for the pond begins April 26.
