Can’t argue with debate team’s success

As competitive tear-jerking dramatic monologues, quirky humor speeches, intense debates and informative lectures come to an end, an invitation is being extended for the public to take a peek at the talent.

The Austintown Fitch High School speech and debate team will host its second annual “Speech Night” Sunday at 6 p.m. in the school’s cafeteria. The free event will include performances, a bake sale, a basket raffle and a Disney decorated motif.

All proceeds from the event will benefit the team and help offset the expensive costs of transportation and registration throughout the speech season.

This year, 46 team members and a staff of six coaches, including head coaches John Mazzucco and Andrea Folsom, participated in 12 tournaments.

On Mar. 5 and Mar.6, 21 competitors and four alternates traveled with the coaching staff to the state tournament in Cleveland, where the team placed ninth overall and produced a state champion, Nicole Cirbus, in Oratorical Interpretation.

The team has placed first or second place 11 times at the state tournament since 1992. State qualifiers will be showcased at the fundraising event.
