Campbell gun law protest set for Saturday

A rally to protest a gun ban in the city will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday at the city building at 351 Tenney Avenue.

The Youngstown State University chapter of the Young Americans for Liberty is sponsoring the event. That group protests constitutional violations. Also expected to participate are members of Ohioans for Concealed Carry, a gun-rights organization.

The rally is expected to last two hours.

The gun ban, which the city council passed in January, prohibits all gun sales in the city limits. It was in the process of being amended to allow private sales by residents, prohibiting only retail sales. The amendment was tabled in March after city Law Director Mark Kolmacic told council the ordinance violates state law. Council is expected to repeal the ordinance at its meeting Wednesday. It intends to instead consider legislation that prohibits gun sales in certain areas through zoning.
