YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown State University will honor its outgoing sixth president by naming the exhibit gallery in the university’s Maag Library Archives after him.

The David C. Sweet Exhibit Gallery will be dedicated in a ceremony at 1 p.m. June 1.

The university’s board of trustees approved the plan in March, noting that it is customary to honor the service of retiring presidents with a prominent and appropriate naming of a campus facility.

Paul Kobulnicky, Maag Library executive director, proposed naming the gallery in Sweet’s honor in a letter to George McCloud, vice president for institutional advancement, back in January.

“The creation of the YSU Archives was the vision of President Sweet, and he guided its development,” Kobulnicky wrote.

Sweet ensured that critical funding was available for the archives project and gave of his own time to review the planning and implementation of the project, Kobulnicky wrote.

And, once it was established, Sweet was an active user of the facility and often publicly cited its value to him in the conduct of his presidency, according to Kobulnicky.

The president recognized how powerful images and artifacts are in connecting people to YSU and how important it is to visually present the rich history of the university to faculty, staff, students and the broader Mahoning Valley community, he said.

Sweet, who has served as YSU president for 10 years, said he is proud that the university created the archives, providing documentation that is timely and very important to YSU.
