1817: The first permanent American school for the deaf opens in Hartford, Conn.

1861: Three days after the Confederate attack on Fort Sumter, President Abraham Lincoln declares a state of insurrection and calls out Union troops.

1865: President Abraham Lincoln dies, nine hours after being shot the night before by John Wilkes Booth at Ford’s Theater in Washington. Andrew Johnson becomes the nation’s 17th president.

1912: The British luxury liner RMS Titanic sinks in the North Atlantic off Newfoundland, less than three hours after striking an iceberg; some 1,500 people die.

1945: During World War II, British and Canadian troops liberate the Nazi concentration camp Bergen-Belsen.

1947: Jackie Robinson, baseball’s first black major league player, makes his official debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers. The Dodgers defeat the Boston Braves, 5-3.

Youngstown Mayor Patrick J. Ungaro says he will submit legislation to City Council to prohibit draw poker machines within the city limits.

1970: The Youngstown Transit Co. raises its fares to 50 cents for all city riders, after rejecting a plan to lease its facilities to the Mahoning Valley Regional Mass Transit Authority.

Youngstown State University trustees approve a 1970-71 budget of $19 million, which includes $2.3 million for a parking deck.

1960: Training classes for severely retarded children should be a function of the board of education, it is reported by a special subcommittee of the Health and Welfare Council to the Community Chest executive committee.

1935: The motor car industry, the nation’s largest, is running in high gear, with more cars sold in the first 16 weeks of 1935 than were sold in all of 1932.
