NEW MIDDLETOWN — Village council has set a meeting on forming a joint fire district and one on extending sewer lines.
The public is invited to a meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday to discuss tentative budget figures as well as the proposed contract for a joint fire district that would include the village and Springfield Township.
The session will be at the village administration building, 10711 Main St..
Also, an informational meeting on providing sewer lines to about 30 homes on Middletown Road was set for 6 to 7 p.m. April 28 at the administration building.
The area is the last in the village that lacks sewers. Homeowners will be asked to commit to the project that night.
Village Fiscal Officer Carl Flitcraft Jr. also announced at village council’s recent meeting that a 4-mill police levy and a 2.5-mill fire levy will expire at the end of this year, and council must decide whether to put replacements, renewals, or an additional millage request on the November ballot.
He said the township has a grant to pay a full-time nighttime police officer but will need to provide money to continue the position once the grant expires.
Council also opened bids for a street-lighting project on state Route 170. The two bidders were J.C.M. Contracting Inc., New Springfield, which bid $62,435, and Cornerstone Electric, Salem, $69,827. The village engineer will review the bids.
Council awarded a contract to R.T. Vernal Paving, North Lima, for Phase 2 resurfacing of Sycamore Drive. Vernal was the low of four bidders, offering to do the job for $50,300.
Also at its meeting, council:
Accepted the resignation of fire department member Robert Joseph, who moved out of the area, and observed a moment of silence for Cindy Keltz, another department member, who died recently.
Hired CleanSweep, New Springfield, to sweep village streets for $1,500, the same price it has charged for the last several years.
Heard police Chief Vince D’Egidio announce that the Memorial Day parade will be May 31. Organizations interested in participating should call the police department for more information.
Heard Flitcraft announce that Lyden Oil has installed a 500-gallon gasoline tank near the administration building so police, fire and street department vehicles do not have to travel to Western Reserve Road to refuel.
