City of Akron cancels July 4th fireworks show in budget move

AKRON, Ohio (AP) — The city of Akron has canceled its big July 4 fireworks display in a cost-cutting move.

The cancellation was announced Wednesday by Mayor Donald Plusquellic.

The traditional fireworks display cost $100,000 including overtime. Instead, the city will look for a donor to pay for a $10,000 fireworks display at an Akron Symphony Orchestra concert.

Akron is facing possible municipal layoffs as its struggles to balance its budget.
