To save money, the Mahoning County treasurer’s office will be closed to the public every-other Friday beginning this week, Treasurer Lisa A. Antonini announced.
“All employees will take a 10-percent pay cut to protect jobs while continuing to serve the taxpayers of Mahoning County,” Antonini said, adding that Teamsters Local 377, which represents her employees, agreed to the reduced work schedule last week.
The reduction is due to a cut in the treasurer’s budget, Antonini said. The treasurer’s office spent $483,650 last year from the county’s general fund, but its allocation for this year is $425,000.
At the county recorder’s office, no decisions have been made yet concerning days the office might be closed, said Pamela Clay, office supervisor. The recorder’s office spent $404,919 from the general fund last year, but its allocation this year is $375,000.
County Auditor Michael V. Sciortino said he is discussing his budget crisis with union leaders in his office.
“The cuts in the auditor’s office will be drastic, a combination of layoffs, [job] abolishments and hours of work,” Sciortino said.
The auditor’s office spent $978,364 from the general fund last year, but its allocation for this year is just $760,000.
County Prosecutor Paul J. Gains announced last month that his employees would immediately begin taking 12 hours off without pay in each two-week pay period, amounting to a 15-percent pay cut through floating holidays.
Last year, Gains spent $2,214,512 from the general fund in his criminal division, but its allocation is $1.7 million this year. His civil division spent $868,157 last year, but its allocation is just $800,000 this year.
