Colorado penguin parents adopt another zoo’s chick
DENVER
African penguins have adopted a chick that had trouble hatching then wasn’t being cared for by its biological parents at another Colorado zoo.
Officials at the Denver Zoo, the chick’s new home, say it’s doing well.
The baby African penguin emerged from its shell at the Pueblo Zoo on March 20, but it was four days overdue and needed help from a staff worker to get out.
When the biological parents appeared unable to care for the hatchling, it was taken to Denver and placed with surrogate parents, who immediately began to feed it and keep it warm.
African penguins once came close to extinction and are listed as “vulnerable” by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources.
Some catch: Ohio coach proposes to rival on field
CINCINNATI
An Ohio high school softball coach threw a curve at the rival team’s coach when he dropped to one knee on the diamond and asked for her hand in marriage.
Glen Este High School varsity coach Tim Gregory and Milford High School coach Christy Foster had been dating more than two years before the proposal.
Gregory says “softball is really what brought us together.” Foster, of course, said yes to the proposal and called it perfect.
The ensuing game wasn’t, though. Gregory’s team won 1 to 0.
Iowa teen makes prom dress out of Wrigley’s gum wrappers
GARNER, Iowa
An Iowa teen is all bubbly over her one-of-a-kind high school prom dress she made out of gum wrappers.
Elizabeth Rasmuson made her dress — and matching vest for her date — out of blue and white wrappers from Wrigley’s “5 gum.”
The high school junior says she got the idea after hearing about someone making a dress out of duct tape.
She and her boyfriend began collecting gum wrappers last August. Rasmuson says she quit counting after 200.
Since the wrappers break easily, Rasmuson finished her dress with a vinyl top coat.
France: Driving instructor busted for speeding
PARIS
A driving instructor in France taught three of his students a lesson about the consequences of speeding, when police stopped him for exceeding the speed limit — with the students in the car.
Police immediately suspended the instructor’s license for four months after he was clocked at 83 mph on a highway off-ramp in Valence, in southeast France, according to local police commander Claude Bourrelly.
