Chaney topples East, 11-1; Salem wins on no-hitter

STRUTHERS
Chaney High’s Eddie Rovnak pitched a complete game giving up four hits and striking out 11, as the Cowboys defeated East, 11-1, in a baseball game on Tuesday.
Rovnak also added 2 RBI, while. Kyle Staton added two hits and also drove in two. Emmett Connor also had two hits and had four stolen bases, while Rich Mauro added a double and drove in a run.
For East, Israel Melendaez had two hits and Jabari Duncan had a double.
Salem 12, Brookfield 0
BROOKFIELD
Salem’s Nick Lesky and Brendan Webb combined for a no-hitter against Brookfield (3-4). Lesky struck out 11 of the first 12 batters he faced, giving Salem an early advantage on the mound.
Dan Gagnon, Randy Wyand and Kenny Saltsman each drove in two, while Lesky and Saltsman both added doubles.
West Branch 7, Carrollton 0
BELOIT
Jeff Deckerd (5-1) gave up three hits and struck out five for West Branch (6-3, 2-2 Northeastern Buckeye Conference) as they were able to get past Carrollton (3-7, 0-5).
Leading West Branch at the plate was Matt Unkefer who went 3 for 3, including a double and driving in a run, and Brenden Wells who added a double.
For Carrollton, Tyler Dixon had two hits, including a double.
Massillon Perry 2, Fitch 0
MASSILLON
Chris Miller (1-1) struck out nine and walked one but got the hard-luck loss for Fitch (2-4, 0-1 Federal League).
Chris Thomas tossed a two-hit shutout with seven strikeouts and no walks to lead Perry (6-0, 3-0), while Rob Purdy had two hits and Jake Mowery added two RBIs.
Girard 9, Liberty 1
GIRARD
Dante Delbene and Brandon Hunkus each had two hits and two RBIs, while A.J. Weibel also had two hits and Tallen Birmingham had two RBIs for Girard (7-3).
A.J. Devore struck out four and walked one, giving up three hits over 41‚Ñ3 innings to get the win. Joe Cavalier got the save, coming in with the bases loaded and one out and inducing a double play.
For Liberty (5-4), Brian Venable had two hits.
Mineral Ridge 13, Springfield 7
NEW MIDDLETOWN
Freshman Dan Ferguson had a triple, double and two singles for five RBIs and also scored three times for Mineral Ridge (5-3, 3-2 Inter Tri-County League).
Tom Robbins had three RBIs on a double and single and the junior scored twice. Senior Anthony Pannunzio (3-1) went the distance for the Rams.
Nick Russell had a double and single and scored three times, while Ronnie Bovo had three singles and scored once for Springfield (7-3, 4-2).
Mathews 5, Maplewood 4
VIENNA
With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Rick Sommers doubled to score Collin Bowser with the game-winner for Mathews (9-2, 4-0 Northeastern Athletic Conference).
Sommers had three hits, including two doubles, and Reed Shields added two hits and two RBIs.
For Maplewood (5-5, 1-2), Chris Hall tripled twice.
Coventry 3, Southeast 0
COVENTRY
Anthony Pennington gave up three runs on five hits against Coventry (4-2, 3-1 Portage Trail Conference) on Tuesday.
Kyle White and Zach Callaz both singled, but that would be all Southeast (1-7, 0-4) could get.
J.J. Gosnell got the win for Coventry.
