Cardinal Mooney High girls basketball coach Jack Bermannn has resigned from his position after almost a quarter century with the school.
The school announced Bermann’s decision through an e-mail Tuesday.
“Jack has been with our program for 23 years, and during those 23 years he has been very dedicated and faithful to all of our athletic programs, especially basketball,” said Sr. Jane Marie Kudlacz, principal of the school. “His commitment and concern with our students has been something that has a been a great fit to our school.”
No reason, other than “personal reasons,” was given, and Kudlacz did not elaborate.
Bermann, who has been with the school since 1987, also declined to elaborate. He did, however, say he had been mulling over the decision to resign since the season ended and made the decision within “the past few days.”
Bermann has been the head coach of the Cardinals since 2003. He had been an assistant to several coaches prior to that, Kudlacz said.
Kudlacz said she’ll remember Bermann’s dedication and commitment to Cardinal Mooney, not just its athletics.
“The thing that first comes to mind is Jack’s generosity and his willingness to help the school and our athletic programs, no matter where it is needed,” she said. “For so many years, he served as an assistant to so many coaches. And when there was an availability, he stepped forward and gave his complete willingness to help the program.”
Bermann said he’ll remember the rivalry games and players most.
“Those are the things you remember,” he said. “Playing Ursuline and Boardman. And obviously the kids.”
Kudlacz added that Bermann supported the student body “just with his presence.”
Bermnann said he has not ruled out a return to the hardwood. He said he’ll take his time and not just “jump right in” to the first position available, but added he is not done as a coach.
“Coaching is still in your blood,” he said. “It’s not a case where I’m burned out.”
Having spent so much time at Mooney, Bermann said it felt rewarding to hear compliments about his dedication.
“When you’re at one place for that long ... It’s nice to see that people realize,” he said.
Kudlacz said anyone interested in filling the vacant position should send resumes with a letter of interest to her via the school address. All submissions should be sent to Cardinal Mooney High School, 2545 Erie St., Youngstown 44507, and are due by April 30.
