In honoring the contributions of Dale Shaffer of Salem, the Salem Historical Society has invited the public to attend a Dale Shaffer Appreciation Day on Saturday at the Salem Historical Society, 208 S. Broadway Ave.

Shaffer, who died last year, would have been age 81 Saturday.

The meeting room will open at 1 p.m. with an opportunity to view Shaffer’s artifacts and a display of his work in preserving Salem’s history. A formal program will begin at 2 p.m. with opening remarks by David Shivers, the president of the society.

Candidates forum

The Core Team of the Union Baptist Church, 528 Lincoln Ave., where Michael H. Harrison Sr. is pastor, will host a candidates forum from 6 to 8 p.m. April 26.

The event will include information on the Mahoning County sales and use tax, 17th Congressional District, 33rd District state Senate, 60th District state representative, commissioner and auditor races.

2-month closing set

Boardman

The Fording Pedestrian Bridge will be closed for two months beginning today.

Extensive repairs will close the bridge, located off West Golf Drive in Mill Creek MetroParks. The work is estimated to take about two months.

The bridge connects the golf course overflow parking lot to the East Golf Drive multipurpose trail.

Charged with assault

WARREN

Tamara L. Murray, 38, of Perkinswood Boulevard, is in Trumbull County Jail without eligibility to make bond after police said she stabbed a 51-year-old-old man she lives with late Saturday.

The victim said Murray stabbed him with a steak knife and butcher knife in the forearm, finger and thigh during a fight.

Murray pleaded innocent in Warren Municipal Court to felonious assault, a felony punishable by up to eight years in prison. She returns to court April 20.

Aggravated robbery

NEWTON FALLS

Bond was set at $50,000 for Joshua L. McLay, 23, of West Liberty Street during his arraignment on charges of aggravated robbery and criminal trespassing.

Police say he robbed Convenient Food Mart, 321 Milton Blvd., late Sunday by showing the clerk a semiautomatic gun and demanding cash. He left the store on foot with the money and was arrested later, police said.

When he appeared in Newton Falls Municipal Court, McLay pleaded innocent to the criminal trespassing. The court did not ask him to enter a plea on the aggravated-robbery charge. If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison.

Child-abuse report

Police were called at 3:30 p.m. Monday to Northside Medical Center, Youngstown, in reference to a child-abuse incident. A 12-year-old girl of the 3000 block of Northgate, accompanied by her grandmother and aunt, told police that her mother assaulted her. She had a bruise under her right eye and small cuts above her right check.

The incident was reported to Trumbull County Children Services Board, which assigned a caseworker to investigate and assess risk in the home for other children, age 8 and 3. The girl is staying with her grandmother.
