Warren academy will remain open

WARREN
The Academy of Arts and Humanities on Elm Road in Warren was on a list of 16 charter schools the state had ordered to close at the end of the current academic year.
However, the school, which serves about 300 students in K-12, will be allowed to remain open, according to Scott Blake, spokesman for the Ohio Department of Education.
Blake said a re-evaluation of the school’s academic performance resulted in its being removed from the list.
The school principal, Lisa Burgess, said last fall that the notice to close because of poor student academic achievement appeared to be in error.
She pointed out the school hasn’t been rated in academic emergency since 2007. It improved to academic watch in 2008 and made continuous improvement on its 2009 state local report card.
The state closing list applied to charter schools that had been rated in academic emergency for two consecutive years.
