The Davis Family YMCA in Boardman will offer a youth running program called FasKidz beginning April 19 on Mondays and Thursdays, 4:45-5:45 p.m. through the end of May.

The program meets in Mill Creek Park at the gravel parking lot across from the golf course.

The final thrust of the program is competition in what is often for most of the kids, their very first road race - the Memorial Mile held on May 31.

The Jock Stop of Boardman sponsors the program by providing each with their very own FasKidz team shirt.

Fighting Saints hire Montgomery as coach

DUBUQUE, IA.

The Dubuque Fighting Saints have named Jim Montgomery as head coach and general manager of the new United States Hockey League team that will begin play this fall.

The team also announced that former Dubuque Thunderbirds head coach Joe Coombs will serve as associate head coach.

Rachel Alexandra works out at Churchill

LOUISVILLE, Ky.

Rachel Alexandra ran six furlongs in her second major workout since returning to Churchill Downs.

The 2009 Horse of the Year covered the distance Monday in 1:12 under exercise rider Dominic Terry. It was the fastest of seven workouts at six furlongs.

Trainer Steve Asmussen says he’ll be looking at how the 4-year-old filly recovers while considering when she’ll race next. He says the workout was “very impressive and fast.”

Kipchoge, Defar win 25th Carlsbad 5,000

CARLSBAD, Calif.

Ethiopia’s Meseret Defar became the first three-time women’s champion in the Carlsbad 5,000, winning in 15 minutes, 4 seconds.

Kenya’s Eluid Kipchoge won the men’s race in 13:11, the fourth-fastest time in the 25-year history of the seaside road race.

English rugby to step up illicit drug testing

TWICKENHAM, England

English rugby is introducing out-of-competition testing for illicit drugs.

The Rugby Football Union, Premier Rugby Limited and the Rugby Players Association said Monday they want to tighten the rules of Britain’s anti-doping authorities.

The rugby groups have created a program that will test during training for cocaine, cannabis, amphetamines and ecstasy. The decision stems from the case of England player Matt Stevens, who is serving a two-year ban for cocaine use.

Monmouth trainer Alan Seewald dies at 62

OCEANPORT, N.J.

Longtime thoroughbred trainer Alan Seewald, who has a horse that could run in the Kentucky Derby this year, has died. He was 62.

Monmouth Park said Seewald died Monday at his home in Middletown. The race track did not know the cause of death.

Seewald’s 3-year-old colt, Uptowncharlybrown, won the Pasco Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs before running third in the Sam F. Davis. The colt is scheduled to run in Saturday’s Lexington Stakes, where it could earn enough graded stakes money to make the May 1 Derby.

Seewald made his mark with Teddy Drone, which won 31 times in 89 career starts. Seewald won 962 times in 5,757 races, including 22 stakes victories.

Team NZ enters 2011 Volvo Ocean Race

WELLINGTON, New Zealand

Team New Zealand says it will compete in sailing’s 2011 Volvo Ocean Race and expects former America’s Cup-holder Alinghi to also take part.

Team boss Grant Dalton says Team New Zealand — which held the America’s Cup from 1995 until it was won by Switzerland’s Alinghi in 2003 — will contest the 2011-12 round the world race under Spanish sponsorship.
