Cow spends days trapped beneath Utah street
KAYSVILLE, Utah
Rescuers have freed a cow that spent several days trapped beneath a city street in Utah.
KSTU-TV Fox 13 reported Thursday that the cow was hoisted out of a storm drain in Kaysville after it was fitted in a harness connected to a tractor.
Animal control officers in Davis County believe the cow squeezed into the culvert several days ago and became trapped as it moved farther into the narrow storm drain system.
Holden Holt tells Fox 13 that he and his wife spotted the trapped cow Thursday morning on a walk.
Crews had to dig up part of a road before the cow was lifted out late Thursday afternoon. The cow appeared to be exhausted but alive.
Ga. man who left jail for cigarettes gets 20 years
WOODBINE, Ga.
Authorities say an inmate who broke out of jail, then returned after stealing 14 packs of cigarettes, has been sentenced to 20 years.
Prosecutors told The Florida Times-Union inmate Harry Jackson, 26, escaped his cell at the Camden County Jail last year and went to the exercise yard to retrieve cigarettes he had expected would be tossed over a fence.
They say that when the contraband wasn’t there, Jackson scaled the fence, broke a window at a convenience store and grabbed cigarette packs only to be arrested upon his return.
Jackson pleaded guilty to burglary and escape charges last Monday. Prosecutors say he had been jailed on charges including driving with a suspended license.
His lawyer, William Ashe, didn’t immediately return a call seeking comment.
Cops: Pa. dad left pot in kindergartner’s Elmo bag
UNIONTOWN, Pa.
Police say a Pennsylvania father went to his son’s elementary school to retrieve nearly four ounces of marijuana from the kindergartner’s Elmo backpack.
State police say Ronald Washington called Menallen Elementary School in Uniontown on Thursday morning to ask if his son had arrived at school.
Police say Washington told school officials he needed to fetch something from the boy’s backpack, prompting school officials to search it. Police say school officials called to say they had found pot in the bag.
Troopers were waiting to arrest Washington when he arrived shortly before 9 a.m.
Online court records don’t list an attorney for the 33-year-old Washington. He was unable to post $100,000 and jailed.
