The vindicator is pleased to announce its Winter Athletes of the Year.
The seven athletes profiled in these pages and on Vindy.com enjoyed great success during their respective seasons, bringing pride to the Valley and representing their schools and teams in the highest fashion.
In basketball, Darryce Moore of Boardman led her team to the best regular-season record in the Federal League and a runner-up finish in the league tournament and in the Division I district tournament. Both times the Spartans played Canton McKinley, the eventual state champions, to the wire.
Moore was named Federal League player of the year for the second time.
Casey Carroll of Youngstown Christian was named Northeast Ohio Inland District player of the year and was selected first team All-Ohio after leading the Eagles to a 19-1 record and a berth in the district final in Division IV.
In wrestling, Johnny Matacic of Jackson-Milton continued his school’s winning legacy by capturing the 130-pound state championship in Division III. In doing so, Matacic placed at the state meet for the second year in a row and gained his revenge on a rival who had beaten only one week earlier in the district tournament.
Bowlers Corey Bayus of Struthers and Samantha Dudley of Hubbard also continued a tradition for Valley athletes at the state level. Both of them finished third individually in the state finals.
Swimmers Garrett Trebilcock — who was The Vindicator swimmer of the year in 2009 — and Emily King are both from Canfield.
Trebilcock placed third in the 200-yard individual medley and was a member of two relays that placed second and fourth, and King qualified for the state meet in two individual events and two relays.
