Garrett Trebilcock Canfield boys
At state, Garrett Trebilcock took third in the 200 IM, 16th in the 100 free and shared a runner-up finish in the 200 free relay with Steve Dalvin and Ryan O’Malley and his brother Gavin Trebilcock.
Also at state, he was an anchor of the fourth-place 400 free relay.
Along with his gold medal finish in the 200 IM as a junior, Trebilcock, a repeat Vindicator swimmer of the year, considers the 200 free relay placement as a senior as a highlight of his high school accomplishments.
“The runner-up [for the 200 free relay] was the highest the Canfield boys ever got, so I’m pretty happy about that,” Trebilcock said.
Trebilcock said the challenge this year was greater because Canfield moved up to Div. I from Div. II.
“Obviously, it was a lot better competition,” Trebilcock said of the difference from his junior to senior seasons.
The Cardinals’ 200 free relay time was .11 slower than champion North Canton Hoover and fell short of the team’s goal, but Trebilcock says he’s proud that the team that lost two quality members to graduation was able to dropped a full second off of last year’s clocking: 1:26.15 (2009) to 1:25.15 (2010).
“We didn’t skip a beat. We took two guys [after last year] we thought would perform. They were motivated to put in hard work to have a shot at the state championship. That’s saying something. We’re pretty proud of that.”
Trebilcock, who was in the YSU Natatorium water at 6 a.m. two school days a week during training, is 18 months older than his brother, who will be a senior next fall.
Treblicock will be swimming at Ohio State, where he’ll pursue a business degree and maybe stay for an MBA. His parents are Gary and Susan Trebilcock of Canfield. His father played basketball on Liberty’s state runner-up team.
