Emily King Canfield girls

Emily King was a member of Canfield’s 200-yard free and 400-yard free relays and, individually, the 100-yard fly and 100-yard free events at state. The relay finishes were 12th (200 free) and 14th (400 free), while the individual finishes were 20th (100 fly) and 22nd (100 free). It was King’s first year at state.

As a junior, 0.2 separated her from qualifying for state in the 50 free.

“Our goal was to make to state in the 400 [relay], but we made it in both [400 free relay and 200 free relay], so it was really amazing,” King said of the bonus after a conference with coach Andrea Linnelli concluded that abandoning the 200 medley in favor of the 200 free would be a good move.

“We decided that it would have been better to take the relay with the best chance to make it to state, so the switch turned out to be a good one,” said the 18-year-old King, who shared the water lanes with Johnna Dunkel, Hilary Allen and Kathryn Mason.

King, the daughter of Randy and Lori King of Canfield, started swimming as a toddler and swam competitively since age 4 at the Warren Olympic Swim Club.

She will follow in the swim-steps of her brothers: Nathan, Tyler and Ryan, all of whom swam or swim at Ohio State.

Nathan and Tyler have graduated from OSU; Ryan is a freshman.

All have benefited from swimming scholarships.

King has been a member of Canfield’s swim team all four years.

The Kings lived in Liberty when Nathan and Tyler attended Warren Harding via open enrollment, then when Ryan was entering his freshman year, the family moved to Canfield.

Academically, King is considering nursing or education as a future profession.
