Corey bayus Struthers boys
The 16-year-old sophomore also placed third individually at state with 706, not far behind the 730 of champion Daniel Glascoe of Beavercreek. Bayus’ best single of the set was his middle game of 266. Corey didn’t seem to think the conditions at Shawnee Lanes in Chillicothe on March 5 were difficult, but, nonetheless, Bayus didn’t compromise his concentration.
“I’ve worked on my mental game, just not giving up,” Corey said of a change in his game since last year.
Corey helped Struthers to a fifth-place finish following a 13th-place standing for the Wildcats in 2009.
Has been bowling since age 3, starting at Camelot, then Bowladrome and Holiday for his high school matches.
His best high school score was 750 as a freshman, while his best overall is 792. Corey shot his first 300 at age 14 at Bowladrome, when he was a Struthers Middle School 8th-grader.
Bowling is Bayus’ No. 1 sport and has aspirations to be a pro.
“I’d love to become a pro someday and bowl on tour,” Corey said. “I watch the pros every Sunday and have ever since I was little.”
said Bayus, whose objectives and mechanics on each throw include ball position, focusing on his mark on the foul line and putting the ball on it.
Bayus has heeded the advice of coaches Bob Eisenbraun Jr. and Tom Graham and local bowler Adam Barta.
“They’ve helped me dramatically, along with Tom and Marge Janosic at Bowladrome,” said Bayus, who averaged 213 during the regular season, 212 at Holiday and 214 on the road. His post-season average was 208.
Recently, the first-team All-AAC bowler had a high game of 278 and finished second out of 49 sophomore boys during the 6th annual Ohio High School Singles Championships in Columbus.
