Chinese cargo to be flown to region

PITTSBURGH

Officials in western Pennsylvania say weekly flights soon will begin bringing cargo from Asia to the region.

Allegheny County says New York-based Wings Logistics will use a Boeing 747 for flights to Pittsburgh International Airport.

Most flights will come from Hong Kong and will carry dresses, T-shirts, jeans and other apparel. The flights will be once a week on average beginning tonight through at least August.

Bradley Penrod, executive director of the airport authority, says test flights indicated that it took only 30 hours to get cargo from takeoff to Pittsburgh and then to distribution centers, as opposed to six days flying into congested New York or Chicago.

In 2007, the airport signed a letter of intent to explore a link between the airports in Pittsburgh and in Xi’an, China.
