YSU SPRING GAME | First quarter
Redshirt freshman Kurt Hess got the start for the Red team (i.e. the starters) over junior Marc Kanetsky, although Kanetsky rotated in after two series. Kanetsky started for the White.
Starting running back Jamaine Cook had the game's first big mistake, getting stripped by junior linebacker David Rach on the game's third play. The fumble was recovered by junior defensive end Josh Myers.
Kanestky drove the Penguins to the 4 but the drive stalled and senior kicker Bob Gratz was wide right on a 21-yard field goal.
The Red then went 80 yards in 10 plays, scoring on a 27-yard TD pass from Hess to senior wideout Dominique Barnes to make it 7-0.
The White tied the game with a nine-play, 70-yard drive, capped by a 1-yard TD run by junior running back Josh Lee.
Kanetsky started the third series with the Red and needed just four plays to make it 14-7. On a second-and-10 at the White 35, Kanetsky stepped up in the pocket to avoid pressure, then rolled left and found Barnes, who was streaking toward the end zone. He hit him perfectly in stride for the score.
Hess went under center for the White and nearly had a TD pass when Matt Romeo got 20 yards past the defense. But Romeo couldn't come up with the catch and the White were forced to punt for the first time.
