Oompa Loompa doompadah dee
If you are wise you’ll listen to me.
Everyone is familiar with this song from “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” but Treena Kackley’s third-grade class at Hilltop Elementary School went above and beyond to celebrate it and the book April 1.
The class earned a reward activity by accumulating 115 pebbles in the class reward jar. Pebbles are awarded by the teacher and are earned by all students in the class and are given for good behavior.
The students then get to choose the type of reward party they will have.
This time it was a choice between a regular party or Wonkamania. Of course, Wonkamania was the overwhelming choice.
“The party is a reward, but is also a culmination of studying and reading the book,” Kackley said. “And we couldn’t have done it without the help of all the parents here today.”
Liz Crew, a Youngstown State University student teacher for the class, even went so far as to dress up as Miss Crew Wonka and the students presented golden tickets to get into the party.
Some activities the students participated in at the party included the Oompa Loompa Song Recording Studio where groups of students took turns recording verses of the song; the Dessert Hall of Fame where students created their favorite dessert with paper; Candy Machine Creations where students were able to invent their own candy machine and the Estimation Station where students guessed how many pieces of candy or marshmallows were in a container.
The students were also able to make chocolate haystacks, decorate sugar cookies with icing and sprinkles and participate in a chocolate chip taste test.
Madison Schrock, a student in the class, summed up the day while she was decorating her sugar cookie.
“This is the best day of my life!” Schrock exclaimed.
Little did she know it would get even better at the end of the party when she was awarded the jar of M&Ms for having the closest guess to the actual number in the jar. It just doesn’t get any better than that.
