Technical center goes the distance

Students at Mahoning County Career and Technical Center are connecting with career professionals and fellow high school students through distance learning seminars.

The seminars do not cost the school money and are a part of the Career Exploration Series from WVIZ/PBS Ideastream, North Ohio Technology Association, MAGNET and Eastern Gateway Community College.

During the most recent distance learning session, students in the Biotechnology program and Chemistry courses met with the owner of Syncro Medical Innovations to learn more about the research and development that goes into the company’s biomedical devices.

“I liked it a lot. I learned a lot about the new technology, we were also able to learn about the future of medicine and the effect the economy can have on product development,” said Jordan Woolley, a junior in the Biotechnology program.

Bob Miller, an instructor at MCCTC, had his class participate in the distance learning session. He said the students enjoyed the session so much that they wanted to stay even longer to ask questions.

The technology allows the students to not only hear from speakers, but to ask questions and learn from questions other students at other schools ask.

MCCTC has participated in three of the distance learning sessions and because of the success, plans to participate in more.
