Scouts celebrated at annual breakfast

The Boy Scouts kicked off their 2010 fundraising campaign with food and fun.

More than 150 people attended the fifth annual “Celebrate Scouting” breakfast Mar. 9 at the Holiday Inn in Boardman. Speakers included Golden Eagle Honorees Judge Theresa Dellick and John Wolboldt, along with young Eagle Scouts James Evans and Wainio.

“Partnering with the Boy Scouts has allowed at-risk youths that come through courts to experience many benefits of scouting that is needed to build character, citizenship and responsibility,” said Dellick.

Wolboldt celebrated his 87th birthday at the breakfast and shared his experiences over the past 70 years in scouting and encouraged everyone to support the program that develops leadership skill and turns young boys into men.

“We need scouting more than ever,” said Wolboldt. “There is no other program in the world that develops young people into leaders.”

Supporters of scouting got to see firsthand how scouting impacts youth as they listened to the energetic and motivational Evans and Wainio talk of their experiences, their appreciation of scouting and their future goals.

Eagle adviser George Grim said that scouting uses the great outdoors as its laboratory and teaches valuable life lessons and skills that will follow each scout the rest of their life.

The event secured $30,000 in pledges with hopes to raise $10,000 more to meet the $40,000 goal.
