Local twirlers strut their stuff

The Northern Strut twirling teams recently represented the Valley at the Marching Auxiliaries Ohio Classic Regional Competition at Westerville Central High School in Westerville, Ohio.

Locals competing were Monica Mattiussi of Austintown; Shannon Chaffee, Kerry Kingsley, Jeana McEvey, Kathryn Rosinski and Jessica Yozwiak of Boardman; Amanda Orr of Canfield; Emmy Graffius of Ellsworth; MacKenzie Compton of North Lima; Madeline Crish, Dina Notareschi of Poland; and Rebecca Platt of Springfield.

In the team twirl category, Crish, Mattiussi, Notareschi, Orr and Platt won the senior team twirl and were also awarded the Choreography Award and Best in Class Award.

In the twirling ensemble division, Mattiussi and Notareschi performed a dance twirl routine, which received a Superior I rating and won the junior ensemble division.

Ensembles of Orr/Platt and Kingsley/McEvey also received Superior I ratings for their duets and Orr/Platt earned a first runner-up overall.Kingsley/McEvey won the senior ensemble division.

In the color guard solo category, both performers received Superior I ratings and Compton won the junior division and Graffius won the senior division.

In the twirling solo category, all twirlers received a Superior I rating. For overall placement in the junior division, Crish and Chaffee tied for third runner-up and Rosinski was second runner-up,

Mattiussi was first runner-up and Notareschi won the division. In the senior solo division, Platt was fourth runner-up, Kingsley was third runner-up, Yozwiak was second runner-up and Orr was first runner-up.

Northern Strut Twirling Teams, established in 1995, is a local twirling group that specializes in both recreational and competitive baton twirling and flag line twirling. It is located within Astre Total Fitness in Boardman.

Northern Strut is under the direction of Janet Gbur with flag line instruction by Phemie Colonna and additional instruction by Katie Kingsley. The team’s primary competition team sponsor is Noday’s Deli.
