Girls track team beats rival Fitch

The Boardman girls track team traveled to the Bedford Relays Saturday where it finished second in the field of 16 teams with an impressive 94 points.

Federal League member Canton GlenOak scored 121 points to win the meet.

For Boardman, the field events showed great dominance as the shot put, discus and long jump took first places.

Valerie Hood threw 38-1 in the shot put and 111-3 in the discus relay to capture the top spot and female MVP of the meet. The long jump relay came up 2 Ω inches shy of the school record, winning the event with a combined total of 47-2 Ω.

“This was our overnight trip of the season and it was supposed to be at the Hilliard Relays, but somehow we weren’t accepted into the meet, but we were never told,” said Boardman coach Denise Gorski. “At the last minute, I had to find another meet and make new overnight arrangements. It all fell into place; our team did very well.”

The Boardman girls track team opened their 2010 Federal League season Mar. 30 with a big win over crosstown rival Austintown Fitch by a score of 85-52. Normally, the two teams meet in the Federal League season finale, but this year the rotation called for them to meet early in the season. It was a meet of great concern to Gorski.

“I told the girls weeks before the meet that Fitch is a very good team and had an outstanding indoor season. We would need to step it up in order to come out on top and that’s exactly what the girls did. They were extremely competitive and had one of our best opening Federal Meets yet since we have been in this league,” said Gorski.

The 4x800 relay team of Kratofil, sophomores Emily Bodamer and Hailey Dickey and junior Katie Heney started the meet off by winning their event with a time of 11:01.

Vlad then took the 100-meter high hurdles, running a season-best time of 16.7 and Glass placed first in the 100-meter dash running 12.7. Her sophomore teammate Lesley Koch placed third with a time of 14.4.

The 4x200 relay team of senior Nicole Biagetti, Koch, freshman Lyndsay Olenych and Glass ran to first place in 1:48.3 — their best time of the season. In the 1600 meters, it was a sweep for the Lady Spartans as Moore won with a time of 5:44.3, senior Kristie Stoll was second in 5:54.4 and Heney was third in 5:55.7.

The 4x100 relay team of Biagetti, Glass, Vlad, and Koch placed first with their season-best time of 51.1. In the 400 meters, Olenych placed third in 65.5, her season-best time.
