Canfield track teams start season with victories
The Canfield High boys and girls track teams began their outdoor seasons with victories over Southeast, Girard and Champion Wednesday at Champion High School. The boys scored 83 points, while the girls rolled up 128.
The boys were led by thrower Dustin Brode, who broke school and stadium records with a toss of 66-1 1/2 in the shot put. He also won the discus with a heave of 165-9.
The 4x800 relay team of Russell Bresson, Luke Stefanides, Christian Anzuini and Jonathan Hutnyan posted a winning time of 8:52.10. The 4x100 quartet of Bryan Sfara, Keith Peterson, Rayshawn Clark and Andrew McClusky won the event in 45.40.
Hutnyan won the 800 meters with a time of 2:11 and Rapone cleared 6-0 in the high jump to win the event. Canfield’s top sprinter was freshman Keith Peterson with a time of 11.20 in the 100 and 23.80 in the 200.
The Lady Cardinals won 11 of the 16 events to beat second-place Southeast by 75 points. Canfield got victories in three of the four relays, all three sprinting races and three field events.
Maggie Bresnahan won both the shot put (30-4) and discus (97-7) to lead the group of multiple event winners.
Emma Lunne claimed three victories, winning the 800 (2:32.1), 1600 (5:40.1) and joining the winning 4X800 relay squad.
Emily Gleichert won the 100 meters (12.8) and was part of the winning 4X100 relay team. Jillian Smith won the 400 (1:04.7) and competed on the victorious 4X800 team. Stephanie Carrocce posted the best time in the 200 (27.3) and ran on the 4X200 team.
Others members of the winning relay teams were Kelly Fening and Jen Love (4X800), Katie Richter, Katie Siskowic and Jackie Podolsky (4X200) and Rachel Morris (4X100).
Leanna Hartsough cleared 5-0 in the high jump to win the meet.
