1909: American explorers Robert E. Peary and Matthew A. Henson and four Inuits become the first men to reach the North Pole.

1917: Congress approves a declaration of war against Germany.

1965: The United States launches the Intelsat I, also known as the “Early Bird” communications satellite, into orbit.

1994: The presidents of Rwanda and Burundi are killed in a mysterious plane crash near Rwanda’s capital; widespread violence and killings erupt in Rwanda over claims the plane had been shot down.

1985: Severe winds sweep through the Youngstown area. A sixplex under construction on Eisenhower Drive in Boardman is flattened with damage estimated at $100,000.

U.S. Rep. Dennis Eckart, D-11th, says a 1982 Defense Department report suggests the Army could sell the western portion of the Ravenna Arsenal to private interests, which would open the possibility of industrial development.

1970: Harvey Williams, 22, is badly burned while saving the lives of his wife and a child from a fire that destroyed an apartment on Mahoning Avenue.

Dr. Sam Sheppard, former Cleveland osteopath who was convicted and then acquitted of murdering his wife, dies in Columbus. He was 45.

1960: Sgt. Dominic Yannarella, 46, is in satisfactory condition after his Youngstown police cruiser is rammed by a county engineer’s department pick up truck. The foreman driving the truck is fired by Engineer Sam Gould.

Youngstown University receives a $7,620 grant from the National Science Foundation for a nine-month in-service institute for secondary science and math teachers.

1935: H.R. Packard, executive secretary of the Chamber of Commerce, says the coal bill for Youngstown industries will increase by $582,000 in 1935 due to freight rates ordered by the InterstateCommerce Commission.

The Mahoning County Experimental farm sells 24 steers for $94.50 each to J.W. Bahan of Bristolville. The money will be used to repair farm buildings.

The Rev. Robert Wells Veach ends his 10-day evangelistic campaign at Westminster Presbyterian Church.
