SUV driver survives 30-foot drop onto train tracks

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. (AP) — Officials in a New York suburb say a woman survived a 30-foot plunge in her SUV onto a set of train tracks after she swerved to avoid a child on a bicycle and crashed through a fence.

Metro-North railroad spokesman Dan Brucker says the accident Monday night in Mount Vernon interrupted service for about 10,000 commuters.

Fire Commissioner Noah Lighty says 20-year-old Stephanie Cacho is lucky to be alive. She's been hospitalized in fair condition.

Rohan Britton tells radio station 1010 WINS he saw "a lot of blood" when he leaped onto the tracks and pulled Cacho through the sunroof of her mangled vehicle.

Witnesses told police the Mount Vernon woman tried to avoid hitting the child on the street above the tracks. Brucker says the SUV narrowly missed electrified rails.
