Pedestrians — and giant bunnies — get right of way

GLENDALE, California

Glendale police who used a bunny costume to decoy bad drivers at crosswalks have abandoned the outfit after it made a city councilman hopping mad.

An officer wore the Easter outfit last Wednesday in crosswalks.

Drivers who didn’t yield to the furry pedestrian were ticketed.

But city Councilman John Drayman harshly criticized the head-turning costume, calling it “breathtakingly dangerous” and a poor use of city resources.

Glendale police continued the crosswalk sting Thursday, but the officer wore shorts and a T-shirt.

A city spokesman says the city is re-evaluating the use of costumes for enforcement campaigns.

Pa. pol ends ‘no vote’ appeal after being rebuffed by court

UNIONTOWN, Pennsylvania

A failed judicial candidate in southwestern Pennsylvania who just can’t believe he received so few votes says he’s finished fighting now that the U.S. Supreme Court has refused to hear his case.

Robert Pritchard Sr., of Fairchance, got just 63 votes for district judge in the May 2009 primary, and zero in two of 19 precincts in the Fayette County election.

The winning incumbent got 2,900 votes, and another challenger got 957.

Pritchard says people could have voted illegally because the county reportedly hasn’t properly purged 25,000 dead or unregistered voters from its rolls.

County attorneys say that had nothing to do with Pritchard’s lopsided loss.

Two state appeals courts previously rejected the appeal.

Pritchard now says, “That’s it. I’m done.”

Man fleeing Ohio police jumps fence — right into prison yard

CLEVELAND

Police say a motorist fleeing officers in Cleveland abandoned his car and jumped a fence — landing in what turned out to be a prison yard.

Garfield Heights police say the chase started in that suburb early March 29 over a traffic violation and reached speeds of 90 mph.

Police say that after a race through several communities, the driver and a passenger bolted from the car and headed for a fence.

They apparently did not realize it was outside the state women’s prison in Cleveland.

They were arrested along with two other passengers who also tried to flee.
