1614: Pocahontas, daughter of the leader of the Powhatan tribe, marries English colonist John Rolfe in Virginia. (A convert to Christianity, she goes by the name Lady Rebecca.)
1792: George Washington casts the first presidential veto, rejecting a congressional measure for apportioning representatives among the states.
1895: Oscar Wilde loses his criminal libel case against the Marquess of Queensberry, who’d accused the writer of homosexual practices.
1951: Julius and Ethel Rosenberg are sentenced to death following their conviction in New York on charges of conspiring to commit espionage for the Soviet Union.

1985: Under a new academic eligibility standard adopted by the Youngstown City School District, junior and senior high school athletes must have a passing grade in all classes to be eligible. Eight basketball players from the city’s five high schools were ineligible at the end of the season to play in the state tournament or participate in spring sports. The standard is tougher than that of the state, which would allow a student to fail two of five courses and still play.
1970: A Kirkmere homeowner shoots and kills a 27-year-old Warren man after surprising the burglar in the dining room of his home at 2800 Dogwood Drive.
Five members of the Mahoning Valley Basketball Officials Association are honored for 15 years of officiating. They are Stan Evans, Dr. Ed Fiffick, John Purucker, Sam Pridon and George Rupert.
1960: The Youngstown Organization of Protestant Men more than doubles its membership in a year, from 982 to 2,308, directors report at a meeting in Foster Memorial UP Church.
1935: Youngstown department store executives ban their employees from playing the numbers game on company time. They say the “bug,” on which daily bets range from pennies to dollars, is a serious threat to employee welfare.
Seven Youngstown “night spots” pay $1,000 for top-of-the-line licenses from the state board of liquor control.
