Ore. suspects returning for car make arrest easy

MEDFORD, Oregon

The people who witnessed a robbery attempt at an Oregon convenience store didn’t need to describe the muggers. They just needed to point.

The two men accused of trying to rob someone at knife point were arrested when they returned to get their car while officers were interviewing witnesses.

Medford police Lt. Bob Hansen says a man leaving the store late last Tuesday was accosted by two men. One brandished a knife and demanded money. The would-be robbers fled when the man ran back into the store and called police.

Hansen says officers were interviewing witnesses in the parking lot when the suspects showed up. Though the men were wearing different clothes, witnesses identified them as the robbers.

The men, 19 and 20 years old, were jailed on charges of attempted first-degree robbery.

Central Pa. county gives a toast to homicide-free jail

BROOKVILLE, Pennsylvania

Jefferson County Judge John Foradora has cracked open a bottle of nonalcoholic sparkling wine to toast something the central Pennsylvania county hasn’t seen since April 1998: a homicide-free jail.

Foradora is on the county’s jail board and made the toast at the board’s meeting last Monday.

Foradora got the wine as a gift when he took office and promised to pop the cork the first time the county’s jail wasn’t housing at lease one homicide suspect.

The judge says the county doesn’t even have any homicide charges on the docket of any courts, down to the district judge level — and only a couple of “cold” or long-unsolved murder cases for which no one has been charged.

Thousands watch as owlets hatch in yard in California

SAN MARCOS, California

A barn-owl couple in California has given birth to a family and a fan club.

Two years ago, Carlos and Donna Royal made an owl box, put it on top of a 15-foot pole in their northern San Diego County backyard and hooked up a video camera. Barn owls Molly and McGee moved into the box in January and started a family.

Since ustream.tv/theowlbox debuted, it’s had more than 3 million hits. More than 17,000 people watched as the first owlet hatched March 21. A fourth baby owl hatched a week ago, with one egg remaining.

The Royals have named the babies Max, Pattison, Austin and Wesley.
