Youngstown Christian splits with Chaney; Girard sweeps


STRUTHERS

Chaney’s Matt Franklin doubled as the Chaney High baseball team defeated Youngstown Christian, 8-5, on Saturday at Cene Park.

In a second game, Youngstown Christian won, 22-14.

In the first game, Youngstown Christian’s Seth McMillan and Dom Echevestre doubled.

In Youngstown Christian’s win, Matt Franklin tripled, doublde and singled while Ed Rovnak had a triple and single for Youngstown Christian (1-2).

Brad Bailey had two doubles while McMillan and Dom Echevestre each had a double while Anthony Abeid had a solo home run and three singles.

For Chaney, Tyler Lillo and Rich Mavro had inside-the-park home runs.

Howland 15-1, Boardman 4-22

BOARDMAN

Matt Preston hit a grand slam, Joey Aulizia went 4-for-4 and Adam Shrodek had three singles for Howland (2-2) in the first game. Mark Leone had two hits and Dustin Corso doubled for the Spartans.

In the second game, Rob Boyd hit two homers and drove in five, Dan Popio hit two homers and drove in four and Carmen Tarantino had three hits, including a grand slam, to lead Boardman (2-2).

Girard 4-14, Lisbon 1-3

GIRARD

Kyle Richey had seven strikeouts in a five-hitter for the Indians in the first game.

Mat Pagano had a single and double while Michael Floravit had two singles and Aaron Jennings had a double.

For the Blue Devils, Josh Cook’s two hits included a double.

In the second game, A.J. DeVore had six strikeouts over four innings before Danny Graziano pitched to five batters and gave up one hit in the top of the fifth inning of a five-inning game.

Joe Augustine had three hits, junior A.J. Weibel had two hits including a double and Michael Floravit had a solo homer for Girard (5-0).

Danny Reese had two hits for Lisbon.

Niles 5-7, Maplewood 0-6

NILEs

Evan Bollinger struck out 11 during a seven-inning four-hitter in the first game. Bollinger also had two hits, including a double.

Zack Wolf had two hits for Maplewood.

In the second contest, two runs in the bottom of the seventh lifted Niles, which had 12 hits. Nick Capogreco and Tyler Wiery had two RBIs apiece.

For Maplewood, Matt Splitler had two hits and David Morrison had two RBIs.

Mooney 10, Columbiana 5

STRUTHERS

Ed Reese went 3-for-3 with two RBIs for the Cardinals (2-1) at Cene Park.

Reese and Ryan Gallagher tripled and Dante Lewis doubled in an 11-hit attack.

For the Clippers (2-2), Tyler Denmeade went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs.

South Range 9-4, West Branch 6-11

NORTH LIMA

Vince Miller had two hits and drove in two runs for the Raiders (3-1) in the first game. Mike Thorpe also had two hits. For the Warriors (3-2), Mickey Manser hit two doubles and Matt Unkefer one. In the second game, Unkefer and Jake Stahl doubled while Brendan Wells and Zach Wyss had two hits each. For the Raiders, Mike Thorpe doubled.

Hubbard 10, Akron SVSM 8

AKRON

Mike Starr and Tommy Jackson scored the go-ahead runs with the help of walks in the top of the eighth inning for Hubbard (3-1).

Jackson had four hits including two doubles, Bo Slemons had two hits including a double and Shelton had two hits including a solo home run.
