Poland blanks Cards; Ursuline falls, 4-2


POLAND

Sophomore Erin Gabriel’s three-run homer propelled the Poland High softball team to a 4-0 victory over Canfield on Saturday.

Jessica D’Apolito’s double knocked in Nicole White for the Bulldogs’ other run.

Gabriel (2-0) pitched a one-hitter for the winners (3-0, 1-0 All-American Conference Red Tier).

Junior Adrienna Sikora singled and sophomore Kaylie Benson walked before Gabriel’s home run.

White, a senior, also singled before D’Apolito, a senior, pushed her across.

Junior Melanie West had the lone hit for Canfield (1-2, 0-1).

Lisbon 4, Ursuline 2

BAZETTA

Kelly Schafer hit a two-run homer and a RBI double for the Blue Devils (1-1).

Katie Snoddy hit two doubles and Kayla Hiscox one. Winning pitcher Lauren Ketchum (1-1) scattered six hits.

For the Irish (2-2), Malikka Caige hit a two-run double in the seventh inning. Pitcher Casey Lower stuck out 15 batters.

East Palestine 6-5, Western Reserve 4-16

EAST PALESTINE

Freshman Logan Gatchel had three hits including a two-run homer for East Palestine, which benefited from a five-run uprising in the fifth.

Sophomore Carly Blair and senior Emily Stewart had two hits apiece while freshman Karly Pence had a two-run single.

Gatchel’s homer put the Bulldogs in the lead, 5-4.

For Western Reserve, Heather Monoski homered while Kristin McConnell and Maggie Stubbs had two hits apiece.

In the second game, Monoski had two home runs that drove in five runs. Cassie Burchett had two hits while Sissy Stubbs had three RBIs on three hits including a home run.

Hannah Mowery had a two-run homer for Reserve (4-1) in a game abbreviated by the 10-run rule.

Emily Stewart, Harley Huston and Logan Gatchel all had an RBI single for Palestine (3-1).

Niles 12-15, Maplewood 1-0

NILES

Winning pitcher Lindsey Dodgson struck out nine batters and walked four in the first game.

Aubrey Hale had two hits and four RBIs while Dodgson drove in three runs. In the second game, winning pitcher Hale stuck out seven and walked one. Her two hits included a double.

Katie Hitchings’ three hits included a triple.

Struthers 4-5, Springfield 0-2

NEW MIDDLETOWN

Dana Mathews and Mandy Ditman doubled for the Wildcats in the opener and Nic Deyman doubled in the nightcap.

For the Tigers (1-2), Devon Sowers had a triple and a double while Nicole Sicioiano doubled.

Girard 3, Harding 1

GIRARD

In a game which had four hits, winner Lisa Holmes allowed three hits, while losing pitcher Lorna Rowe McMillion gave up just one.

Girard (4-1) scored a run in the second, fourth and fifth innings before Harding got on the board.

Mathews 13-9, Brookfield 2-7

BROOKFIELD

Junior Brittany Schnarrs had an eight-strikeout, four-walk one-hitter in the 13-2 five-inning game.

Junior Jenna Whitfield went 4-for-4 and had three RBIs, while Brittany Schnarrs went 2-or-4 for Mathews (3-0).

Caylin Corns had the lone hit for Brookfield.

In the top of the eighth of the 9-7 game, Mathews snapped a 7-7 tie when both runs scored on passed balls, one by Jessica Marsico and the other by Jenna Whitfield.

Marsico doubled and Whitfield walked, but a dropped ball allowed Marsico to advance to third. When Marsico scored on passed ball Whitfield advanced to second. Junior Autumn Timko’s sacrifice bunt advanced Whitfield to third before Whitfield scored on a passed ball.

Stephanie Durig had three hits while Jen Tillery and Whitfield both had two hits for Mathews (3-0).

Gould and Ellcessor both had two hits for Brookfield (1-3).
