LOCKSLEY LEAVES: Freshman quarterback Meiko Locksley, who was a part of Coach Eric Wolford’s first recruiting class at Youngstown State University, has left the team. Locksley won a state championship at LaCueva (N.M.) High last fall after spending his first three years of high school in Champaign, Ill. Locksley (6-1, 180) enrolled early at YSU for the spring semester but was battling for the third spot on the depth chart. “I think it was difficult for him with his family in New Mexico,” Wolford said. “It just didn’t work out. It’s probably in his best interest for him to get back closer to home where his support system is.” That leaves junior Marc Kanetsky and redshirt freshmen Kurt Hess and Gannon Hulea as the only quarterbacks on the roster. “My philosophy is, anytime you ever lose a guy, you expect another person to step up and that’s your opportunity,” Wolford said. “You’ve got to seize it.”
STILL RECRUITING: This year’s spring practice is several weeks earlier than last season, giving the new coaching staff a chance to address personnel needs this summer. When asked if he has a lot of scholarships available to transfers, Wolford said, “We’re like storage — we’ve always got room,” he said. “I think we still have a lot of needs. We have to get stronger as a football team, especially on the line of scrimmage. We have to raise the level of athleticism across the field and that’s what they call recruiting. We have to continue to recruit and develop the players that we have here and get them to become overachievers and we’ll be in business.”
SCRIMMAGE STANDOUTS: Hess got the majority of the snaps, completing 25 of 39 passes for 262 yards and three TDs. Kanetsky completed 16 of 23 for 205 yards and a touchdown and Hulea was 2-for-4 with a TD. For the second straight scrimmage, Dominique Barnes was the leading receiver, catching five passes for 127 yards and a TD. Dionte Snow caught seven passes for 49 yards and two TDs, Jelani Berassa caught nine passes for 68 yards and a TD and Ely Ducatel caught three passes for 25 yards and a TD. Rushing-wise, Torrian Pace carried 27 times for 168 yards and two TDs and Dan Banna had 83 yards on 22 carries with four TDs. Starter Jamaine Cook was banged up early but is expected to be OK.
