HandsOn Volunteer Network of the Valley, a United Way agency, is the local resource for volunteer recruitment, placement, and management for people of all ages and abilities in the Mahoning Valley located at Youngstown State University, second floor of the Williamson School of Business in the Center for Non-profit Excellence and our main office, 5500 Market St., Suite 106, Boardman. HandsOn is a monthly column that serves to communicate the impact volunteering can have on our community. April 18-24 is National Volunteer Week: The theme for National Volunteer Week is “Celebrating People in Action.” Many activities will be taking place across the Mahoning Valley to recognize the valuable contributions of volunteers in our community. For information contact (330) 782-5877.
Summer of Service Adult Team Leaders: A new concept in youth service that engages teens from Mahoning and Trumbull counties in weeklong team-based service projects. If you are 21 or older and have some experience working with young people or leading a team, HandsOn needs you. Adult team leaders will coordinate and work alongside a group of 8-10 Youth Volunteer Corps students as they work on a high impact service project at a local nonprofit organization. Flexible Data Entry Opportunity: Are you good at organizing, filing and have good computer skills? FGP of Trumbull County needs you to enter time sheets and data from the FGP volunteers into their database and file the time sheets. Flexible hours are available Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, contact Virginia Holmes at (330) 373-6480, ext. 227.
Good Will Good Guides: The Good Guides Youth Mentoring Program of Youngstown seeks to engage youth in positive activities by matching young people with strong adult role models. Mentoring opportunities include one-on-one or small-group opportunities. Good Guide mentors are asked to spend a minimum of six hours per month for one year with their mentee. Chronic Disease Self Management Program Facilitators: If you are 55 or older and have a chronic illness or would like to help others learn to manage their chronic diseases (i.e. diabetes), contact HOVN to learn about training opportunities available through RSVP and the Area Agency on Aging. Calling all yard-sale participants: Forum Health North Side Campus will host a rummage sale to benefit the American Heart Association on May 7. Volunteers are requested to help with set-up and tear-down as well as assisting customers with sale items. Shifts for the event are 8 a.m. to noon and noon to 4 p.m. Parking will be available nearby. Warren Backpack Program Volunteers: Three volunteers are needed April 13 for about one to two hours to help unload the Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley truck and pack the backpacks at Christ Episcopal Church, 2627 Atlantic Ave. N.E., Warren. Some volunteers may be required to lift up to 40 pounds. For more information, contact Rita Brady at Second Harvest Food Bank (330) 792-5522.
Outdoor Spruce-Up: Shepherd of the Valley in Poland has an opportunity for a group of outdoor enthusiasts to help them get their grounds back in shape after a long, snowy winter. Landscaping or gardening experience are a plus but not required. This is a great project for a small group of four to six adults. If you’re interested, contact Corrie at (330) 726-7110.
