VIENNA

Navy Lt. John C. Holzer assumed command of the Navy Operational Support Center at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station during a recent change-of-command ceremony at the Naval Reserve Center.

Holzer, whose most recent assignment was onboard the guided missile destroyer, USS Ramage, as the fire-control officer and ballistic-missile-defense officer, replaced Cmdr. Fredrick Vincenzo, who has led the support center since 2008.

94th Airlift Wing

HOWLAND

Air Force Reserve Col. Timothy E. Tarchick, a native of Howland, has assumed command of the 94th Airlift Wing, Dobbins Air Reserve Base, Marietta, Ga., after serving as commander of the 934th Airlift Wing in Minneapolis, Minn. This is the third wing Tarchick has commanded during his 32 years of military service. Dobbins is the largest multiservice reserve training base in the world, supporting more than 10,000 Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force guard members and reservists.

Tarchick, formerly assigned to the 910th Airlift Wing at Youngstown Air Reserve Station in Vienna, is a veteran of numerous Air Force operations. His experience includes flying C-130 Hercules missions in the Persian Gulf during Operation Desert Shield; combat missions into Sarajevo, Bosnia, during the siege of the city; and missions into Louisiana and Texas in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

His Reserve duty assignments include the 440th Airlift Wing in Milwaukee, Wis.; the 928th Airlift Wing at Chicago-O’Hare Air Reserve Station, Ill.; Headquarters Fourth Air Force, McClellan Air Force Base, Sacramento, Calif.; the 940th Air Refueling Wing, Beale Air Force Base, Marysville, Calif.; the 914th Airlift Wing in Niagara Falls, N.Y., and as commander of the 920th Rescue Wing in Cocoa Beach, Fla. He has flown more than 6,000 hours in seven versions of the C-130 Hercules Transport aircraft, the KC-135E/R Stratotanker refueling aircraft, and the HH-60 Pave Hawk combat search and rescue helicopter.

Tarchick is the son of George and Amy Tarchick of Howland. Col.l Tarchick and his wife, the former Cindee Clow of Pembina, N.D., have six children. He graduated in 1978 from Howland High School and received a bachelor’s degree in 1984 from Youngstown State University.

HONORS

McNally honored

Air National Guard Staff Sgt. Brendan T. McNally, assigned to the 179th Air National Guard Group Operations Intelligence Force in Mansfield, has received several awards during his career.

Most recently, McNally, formerly of Boardman and Canfield, received the Air Force Bronze Star, presented by the Air Force Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Agency; and the Japan Air Self Defense Force Citation, presented by Japan.

McNally is the son of Thomas M. McNally of Canfield and Victoria McNally Pike of Akron. His grandparents are Thomas McNally in Florida, and Frank and JoAnn Esposito of Boardman.

DEPLOYED

Billig back in Alaska

Army Staff Sgt. Nicholas C. Billig has returned to Fort Richardson, Alaska, after being deployed for a year in Afghanistan, where he was assigned to the 4th Airborne Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division at Fort Richardson. The brigade served in the eastern provinces in Afghanistan of Paktya, Paktika and Khost.

Billig, a section chief, normally is assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 377th Parachute Field Artillery Regiment. He is the son of Richard Billig and Sandy Dickson, both of Grove City, Pa.

To Afghanistan

Army Pfc. Joseph Fox, son of Debbie Reynolds of Austintown and Jody Fox of North Carolina, is scheduled to be deployed April 26 to Afghanistan.

Fox, who enlisted in April 2009 and is a member of the 101st Airborne, is a 2008 graduate of Austintown Fitch High School and also a graduate of New Castle School of Trades, where he was on the dean’s list. He is the grandson of Stan and Helen Boodry of Austintown.

BASIC TRAINING GRADS

Army: Pvt. Jeffery A. Romain (Newton Falls High School, ’03), son of Jeffery Romain of Warren and Tammy Romain of North Jackson.

Navy: Fireman Recruit Deena M. Kuehm (Howland High School, ’06), daughter of Jennifer K. and stepdaughter of Brian E. Martinez of Warren.
