Ex-mayor foils North Side theft

Staff report

YOUNGSTOWN

A 21-year-old city man has been charged with receiving stolen property after former Mayor George McKelvey spotted a possible theft in progress Friday afternoon near his North Side home.

McKelvey, of Tod Lane, alerted police around 4:30 p.m. that a man was riding a bicycle on Tod and pulling a snowblower and a weed trimmer.

A resident of the 2300 block of Selma Avenue called 911 about that same time to report that his weed trimmer and snowblower had been stolen.

A Youngstown police officer spotted Walter “Bennie” Kornegay of 1103 Catalina Ave. walking in the 800 block of Alameda Avenue carrying a weed trimmer.

Officers questioned Kornegay and retrieved the weed trimmer in a nearby garage and the snowblower behind Main Moon restaurant on Belmont Avenue.

Kornegay was taken to the Mahoning County jail.
