EARTH DAY | Local events, programs

Numerous celebrations are on tap to recognize the 40th anniversary of Earth Day on April 22. Activities scheduled in Mahoning County for April and May:

Monday: Pharmaceutical take-back program, noon to 3 p.m. at the Austintown Township Police Department, 92 Ohltown Road.

April 17: Green Idol Contest, starts at noon at the Southern Park Mall, 7401 Market St., Boardman; Earth Day celebration, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Lake Milton Fish & Game.

April 18: Earth Day celebration, starting at 10 a.m. at Sebring Trinity Lutheran Church, 930 N. 12th St. Youngsters to perform “Helium Balloons Don’t’ Go to Heaven.”

April 21: Youngstown State University Earth Day celebration, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Kilcawley Center; “Hit a Home Run Through Recycling,” 3 to 6:30 p.m. in McCune Park, Canfield.

April 22: Third annual Trash Bash Fashion Show. Two shows get under way at 10:30 a.m. and 11:20 a.m. in the cafetorium at the Mahoning County Career & Technical Center, 7300 N. Palmyra Road, Canfield; Earth Day Family Fun Night, 5:30 p.m. at Jackson-Milton Preschool, 14110 Mahoning Ave., North Jackson.

April 24: Youngstown Litter Control & Recycling’s appliance recycling drive, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Metalico Youngstown, 100 Division St. Ext.; Mill Creek MetroParks’ 28th annual Boy Scout Earth Day Clean Up, 9 a.m. to noon; Sam’s Club Recycling Display and Crafts, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Boardman Sam’s Club, 6361 South Ave.

April 25: Spring compost seminars at Mill Creek MetroParks Farm, state Route 46 in Canfield. The Mahoning County Green Team is to provide a training session and distribute backyard compost bins.

May 1: YLC&R’s tire recycling drive, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Covelli Centre, Youngstown.

May 4: Earth Day celebration at Damascus Elementary School, 14406 S. Pricetown Road (state Route 534), Damascus. Green Team to present numerous earth-friendly activities during this all-day gathering.

May 8: Household hazardous waste collection, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Canfield Fairgrounds.

May 19: Earth Day celebration at Jackson-Milton Elementary School, 14110 Mahoning Ave. All-day event similar to Damascus program.

May 22: YLC&R electronics recycling drive, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Covelli Centre; YLC&R Great American Clean Up, 8 a.m. to noon throughout Youngstown. Also, the Green Team is sponsoring a countywide cleanup event through May 31. Call (330) 740-2060 for more information.

May 29: Lake Milton Free Drop and Swap, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Craig Beach Fire Department, 1797 Grandview Drive.
