New cleaning service goes green

A new business with a social enterprising twist is giving women a chance to be real stars.

The Beatitude House began a journey last year to expand its mission in the Mahoning Valley, to provide more career opportunities to local women and to create a new stream of revenue.

After being selected as one of six nonprofit organizations and agencies to become part of a social entrepreneurship project funded by The Wean Foundation and the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley, the Beatitude House Venture Team established a new cleaning service business which will operate on a co-op model.

This became feasible with help from a Washington-based firm, Community Wealth Ventures. Ashlee Miller, a consultant with Community Wealth Ventures, said that balancing the goals of the organization as well as developing a new business that performs well financially is always a significant challenge.

Peer learning sessions conducted by Community Wealth Ventures were held from January to June covering topics including marketing, operations, staffing and finances. The peer learning sessions culminated in a final presentation to a panel of Mahoning Valley business representatives, who evaluated the business plans of each group and provided expert advice.

The day-to-day process of putting the many parts of the Green Clean business together began in the summer of 2009 with staff, volunteers and members of the community.

In October, The Beatitude House Green Clean opened for business and has secured approximately 33 customers including three nonprofits. The company was established as a residential cleaning service that would protect the environment and its clients through the use of eco-friendly products.

The Beatitude House is the founding member of the business along with women who work and join the co-op.

Kelly A. Elko, director of The Potter’s Wheel and the Green Clean manager, is optimistic about the future of the business.

“I have seen incredible growth and dedication from the women involved. They have taken on new responsibilities and challenges that will make them productive and valuable members of the cooperative.”
