Canfield softball defeats Hubbard

The Canfield girls softball team beat Hubbard 1-0 in both teams’ season opener Tuesday.

In the bottom of the seventh, with a score of 0-0, Sarah Vrabel drew a walk and Kayley Keller reached base after getting hit by a pitch. Rebecca Brown followed with a walk to load the bases.

Freshman Abby Baker drove in the winning run with an RBI-single to score pinch runner freshman Alexa Schmidt for the victory.

Canfield finished with one run on three hits, while Hubbard managed four hits.

Laura Beck and Brina Sturgeon each had hits for Canfield.

Winning pitcher Carlee Hart (1-0) scattered four hits, struck out 13 and walked none.

Leading hitters for Hubbard were Keri Durina with a double, Ashley Bone and Mariah Gordon each with a single.

Tennis team opens season with victory

The Canfield varsity tennis team defeated Salem 5-0 in its first match Tuesday.

Singles match winners were Ryan Sankovic (6-1, 6-0), Tony El-Hayek (7-6, 6-2) and Mark Dalvin (6-1, 6-2). Winning doubles matches for the Cards were Ryan Yankush and Pawan Solanki (6-3, 6-4) and Ishmeer Grewal and Alex Chiu (6-7, 6-4, 7-6).

Go golfing and benefit cancer society

Walgreens will host a charity golf scramble May 22 at Mill Creek Golf Course in Boardman with all proceeds benefitting the American Cancer Society.

Registration and breakfast will begin at 8:15 a.m., followed by a 9:30 a.m. shotgun start.

The cost for the event is $50 a person and includes cart, tee time, breakfast, lunch and all non-alcoholic beverages. There will be prizes for closest to the pin on all Par 3s and longest drive on the longest Par 5. Other games, raffle prizes and entry gifts will be available.
