Boardman girls track opens with win
The Boardman girls track team opened the 2010 season with the largest senior class in school history and a win over Cleveland St. Joseph.
The 74-member team has 24 seniors including, distance runners Lindsay Basile, Marisa Centofanti, Shelby Crump, Lauren DeLuca, Lauren Granchie, Alison Hall, Kylie Jenkins, Colleen Kratofil, Kristie Stoll, Rochelle Zell and Chloe Zocolo.
Senior sprinters are Nicole Biagetti, Jionna Bodrick, Doriyon Glass, MaryAnn Miller, Rachael Repko, Samantha Toke and Alexa Zackasee. Karlie Ligore and Anna Mafodda are pole vaulters and Kim Maravola will compete in the high jump. Guiliana Silvestri will compete in the 100 hurdles and sprinting events and Valerie Hood and Heather McSuley will lead the throwing events. The squad opened its season with a strong showing and a 102.5-34.5 victory.
“It was a very good day for us and we saw some nice things happen,” said Boardman girls coach Denise Gorski. “It’s good to get that opening meet in so you know where everyone is at with their times, distances, and heights and then you can really set goals from there. The girls were extremely competitive and showed nice team depth.”
The meet started with a sweep by the 100 hurdlers as junior Nicole Vlad won in 17.1, Silvestri placed second running 18.1, and freshman Lauren Davila placed third running 18.1.
In the 100-meter dash, Glass won in 12.5 and sophomore Lesley Koch was second in 13.3. The 4x200 relay team of Biagetti, Glass, Koch and Davila won the event in 2:00.4. Sophomore Tori Moore won the 1600 meters with a time of 5:41.3 and came back later in the meet to win the 800 in 2:36.1. Teammate Hailey Dickey placed second with a time of 2:43.
The 4x100 relay team of Biagetti, Glass, Vlad and Koch won in 51.8. Bodrick won the 400 meters in 66.1, while the hurdlers again swept another event in the 300 intermediate hurdles. Vlad won in 51.5, Davila was second in 54.3 and junior Chelsea Dunn was third in 55.4.
In the 200 meters, Biagetti won in 27.4 and Koch was second in 28.0. Stoll won the 3200 in 12:27.2 and the 4x400 relay team of Glass, Vlad, Moore, and Bodrick won in 4:27.7.
The field events scored many points for the team. It was a sweep in the shot put with Hood throwing a career-best toss of 40-1/2 to win the event. Freshman Daisy Robinson was second, throwing 32-1 º and McSuley was third with a toss of 31-5. Hood took the discus event with a toss of 110-3.
In the long jump, Biagetti jumped 16-5 Ω to win and sophomore Isabella Iures jumped 14-8 to place second. Davila cleared 14-1 º to place third.
In the pole vault, sophomore Jen Bresnahan cleared 7-6 to place second and junior Shelby Dofka placed third with a vault of 6-6. In the high jump, junior Rachel Cantanzriti placed second with a jump of 4-8 and Maravola was third jumping 4-6.
Gorski entered her 28th year as head coach and 32nd year total in the girls program. She is assisted by Bruce Breuing, girls distance coach, John DePietro, hurdle coach, Glenn Sivak, jump coach, Tom Swartz, throwing coach, George Mavrikis, pole vault coach and head boys coach Dave Pavlansky, who works with sprinters.
