Help Neighbors showcase your summer fun

Summer is fast approaching and Neighbors would love to hear about your organization’s plans for spring and summer festivals, Vacation Bible School programs, community events and sports camps and outings.

Just let us know who, what, when, where and why and we’ll get the word out for you.

Then, don’t forget to send us pictures of all the fun so we can share them with your neighbors.

Indoor flea market Tuesday

The Saxon Club will host an indoor flea market Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in its ballroom, 710 S. Meridian Road.

Authentic German baked goods will be featured and a lunch, including sauerkraut, hot dogs, German sausage sandwiches, chips soft drinks and coffee will be available after 11 a.m. There will be a $1 grocery bag sale at 1:30 for everything excluding jewelry.

YMCA offers swimming and training programs

The D.D. and Velma Davis Family YMCA is offering swim programs available for every level of swimmer beginning Apr. 12 and training courses for participants looking to become certified YMCA swim instructors from May 5 to May 26.

Swim lessons are open to children as young as 6 months through adult and will last six weeks. The cost is $47 for nonmembers.

The training course is open to participants 16 or older who are able to swim continuously for 100 yards. Participants must have certifications in First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer. The cost for the course is $175 for participants who register before Apr. 28 and $200 for those registering after.

The course will be conducted on Wednesdays from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturdays from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m.

Night at the races

Monsignor John J. Lettau fourth degree assembly 2596 of the Knights of Columbus will host a night at the races Apr. 17 at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Center Road in Poland at 7:30 p.m.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. for adults 21 and over. Complimentary refreshments will be included. The winner need not be present for the 50/50 raffle.

Locals students perform in YSU play

Local students from Youngstown State University’s Performing Arts series will be featured in performances of Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic opera “The Mikado” Apr. 9 through Apr. 11 and Apr. 16 through Apr. 18 in Bliss Hall’s Ford Theater at Youngstown State University.

Boardman residents with roles in the play include, Matthew J. Miles, Nanki-Poo, Trevor Coleman, Pooh-Bah, Shafica Kaleel, Yum-Yum, Allyson Pollice, Pitti-Sing and Alecia Hetrick, Katisha.

The performances will be at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 3 p.m. on Sunday. The cost is $5 for YSU students with ID and season ticket holders, $15 for adults and $10 for seniors, YSU faculty, high school and college students from other universities. A brunch will be offered for the Apr. 11 show at MVR, 410 Walnut St. at 1 p.m. Brunch/ticket prices are $20 for season ticket holders and $25 for non-season ticket holders.

Show tickets may be reserved by calling the University Theater Box Office.

Reservations and payments are required prior to the brunch event. Phone reservations, with a credit card and ticket reservation, can be made by calling 330-941-3105. No walk-ins will be permitted.

Parking will be available in the Wick Avenue parking deck for a nominal fee.

Fill your trunk with treasures and join the sale

The Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross is hosting a “Trunk Treasures” sale Apr. 17 at the Greenwood Hummer parking lot from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Participants can fill their trunk with anything they want to sell or bring a table and join others at the sale.

A parking space is $25 and you can buy two adjoining spots.

Reservations must be made by Apr. 9. Food vendors are welcome.

The event is being sponsored as part of the year-long 100th anniversary celebration of the Mahoning chapter.

Local real estate agents receive awards

Jennifer Dorbish, Renee Dalesandro-lizer, and Nancy Cuffle were given awards for Top Producers of Re/Max Valley Real Estate, for the entire year, 2009.

Boardman native receives honor

Boardman native Jane D’Isa-Smith has been listed “Among the Best Doctors” in Cleveland. The award is determined by a survey of peers evaluation and includes 76 specialty areas.

Smith is a 1985 graduate of Cardinal Mooney High School and daughter of Boardman residents Frank and Mary Kay D’Isa. Smith resides in Hudson, Ohio, with her husband, Sean, and four children and works in Internal Medicine at South Pointe Hospital in Warrenville Heights.

Tape the library director to the wall

Help the Teen Advisory Board for the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County raise funds by purchasing strips of duct tape to tape Carlton Sears, library director, to a wall at the Boardman Library Apr. 15 at 7 p.m.

All proceeds will benefit the library.

Strips of tape may be purchased from any Teen Advisory Board member, at various library branched in the community and through the Library Development Office at 330-744-8636, ext. 118.

The event is being sponsored in celebration of National Teen Literature Day.

Have family fun and a fairy tale

The Friends of the Library will host “Three Piggies” Apr. 29 at 7 p.m. at the Boardman branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County

Puppets will perform the favorite fairy tale and children of all ages can make a craft following the performance. Refreshments will be served. Preschoolers must be accompanied by an adult.

Become part of the Teen Advisory Board

Teens in grades seven to 12 are invited to join the Teen Advisory Board for the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. The group meets the first Wednesday of the month.

Local alum receives honor from university

Jamie Amero, Boardman alum and third-year Pharmacy student, has been inducted into the Aurora Chapter of Mortar Board at Ohio Northern University, based on her excellence in scholarship, leadership, and service.

Mortar Board is a national honor society that recognizes college seniors for outstanding achievement in scholarship, leadership and service.

Library offers children’s programs

The Boardman branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County is offering Baby Brilliant programs in April.

Tales and Talks for 2’s and 3’s will be at 10 a.m. on all Wednesdays in April.

Fun Time for 4’s and 5’s will be Tuesdays at 10 a.m. “Three Piggies” puppet play and craft will be featured Apr. 27.

Red Cross offers blood pressure screening

The Mahoning County Chapter of the American Red Cross is offering free blood pressure screenings Monday from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Boardman branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County.

The Friends of the Library will meet Apr. 12 at 10 a.m. at the Boardman branch of the public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County.

The meeting will include the program “General George Armstrong Custer” by Cliff Powell.

Technology student advances to state

Student Robert Murrelll will advance to state level competition in Columbus after taking first place in PC Servicing and Troubleshooting at the Business Professionals regional competition.

Regional awards were announced Feb. 16 at Georgetown Banquet Facility.

Duquesne student recognized on dean’s list

Sarah Large, a sophomore in the John G. Rangos, Sr. School of Health Sciences, has been named to the Fall 2009 dean’s list at Duquesne University.

The dean’s list recognizes full-time students who maintained at least a 3.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale. Large is the daughter of Scott and Dani of Boardman.

Amateur ham radio classes set for May 1 and 8

The Mahoning Valley Amateur Radio Association will conduct amateur radio classes May 1 and May 8 at 11 a.m. at the ITT Technical Institute, 1030 N. Meridian Road in Youngstown.

These classes will help students review what they have learned in home study in preparation for taking a Ham Radio license exam.

Students successfully passing this exam will earn an entry-level amateur radio license from the Federal Communications Commission.

License exams will be given following the review class May 8 for students taking the classes.

The classes are free, but students will be required to purchase a study guide (#9647) from the ARRL by calling 888-277-5289.

This is the same study guide used in the 2009 license classes, so students may be able to borrow a study guide from a former student.

Registration deadline is March 28. This will give students a chance to order the book and study the material. There is also a nonrefundable filing fee for taking the exam. Call Jerry or Bonnie Viele at 330-534-1394 for information.

Spring clean and donate items to Goodwill

Get an early start on spring cleaning and donate to the Youngstown Area Goodwill Industries.

Items needed include clothing, housewares, small kitchen appliances, glasses, dishes and home decor.

Goodwill will take computers and computer equipment as part of the Dell Reconnect recycle program.

Donation location centers can be found in the Boardman Plaza, Hermitage Hills Plaza, Warren Plaza, Shenango Towne Center and at 2747 Belmont Ave. in Liberty.

Local students earns academic honor

Andrea Firth has been named to St. Mary’s College Dean’s List for fall 2009 semester for achieving a grade point average of at least 3.4 on a 4.0 scale.

HLAA to meet monthly to offer free tax help

The Boardman branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County will offer free tax preparation and electronic filing for seniors and those with low to moderate income on Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. until April 15.

Students receive prestigious scholarships

The University of Findlay has awarded merit scholarships and endowed scholarships for the 2009-10 academic year.

Boardman High alumni Austin Clark, a pre-veterinary medicine major, was awarded the Trustee’s Scholarship.

Ann E. Bonifas was awarded the Memorial Scholarship. Courtney Hull, an animal science major, was awarded the Dean’s Scholarship.

Trustee Costello takes new leadership role

Township Trustee Thomas P. Costello has been appointed to the executive board of the Coalition of Large Ohio Urban Townships.

Fellow trustees Larry Moliterno and Brad Calhoun nominated Costello.

CLOUT formed in 1995 as a means for large townships to provide input and solutions to state legislators on problems and issues affecting large and/or urban Ohio townships.

Townships are eligible for membership if they have a minimum population of 15,000 people in an unincorporated territory and a minimum budget of $3 million.

The late John Cox, a former township trustee, was one of the originators of CLOUT in 1995, and Boardman has been a member for 15 years.

Volunteers needed for outreach program

The American Red Cross Mahoning Chapter, 8392 Tod Ave., is looking to add to the number of health-care professionals who volunteer.

Nurses, physicians, paramedics and EMTs are a critical component to the outreach program of free blood-pressure screenings. This year, during its 100th year in existence, the Mahoning chapter plans to reach 2,010 individuals with free blood-pressure screenings.

Can goods collection set for Rescue Mission

The Adult Education Medical Assistant Program at Mahoning County Career and Technical Center is having a community outreach drive for the Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley.

Items needed include canned foods, first-aid items and toiletries.

Drop-off locations are Mahoning County Career and Technical Center on Palmyra Road in Canfield, Wedgewood Pizza on South Avenue in Boardman, Austintown Surgery Center on North Canfield-Niles Road in Austintown and Walgreens Pharmacy on Mahoning Avenue in Austintown.

MCCTC salon offers afternoon hours

The Mahoning County Career and Technical Center’s salon will be open Tuesday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and noon to 2:10 p.m. through May.

All services are performed by students under the supervision of their instructor. Services include haircuts, hairstyles, perms, relaxers, facials, hair removal, hair color and manicures and prices start at $6.
