ACS to host community party
In 2008, the American Cancer Society agreed to allow long-time Poland resident and two-time cancer survivor John Whitinger start a Relay For Life in his community.
The first year, the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Poland raised over $12,000 toward the ACS core mission of eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service.
Last year, the event shattered its $25,000 goal by raising just short of $50,000.
The event already has a commitment from almost every team that participated in last year’s event and is still recruiting new teams.
As the event grows, so do the demands for the number of people required to ensure its success.
“We have positions open on our committee and we are always looking for new teams,” said Whitinger. “There will be new things at the 2010 event, including the addition of planned childrens’ activities and a car show. Also returning this year will be the popular Heart of Relay Auction and the Midnight Firefighters Walk.”
