Youngstown State University has tapped its executive director of student services to serve as interim vice president for student affairs, replacing Cynthia E. Anderson, who becomes YSU’s seventh president July 1.

Jack Fahey, who is also the university’s ombudsman, has worked 30 years in various capacities in the Division of Student Affairs.

“I have full confidence in Jack Fahey,” Anderson said. “He has a passion for Youngstown State University and our students. He will place their interests and welfare at the forefront of all of his decisions. I look forward to working with him on behalf of our students.”

“Jack Fahey is an ideal choice for this position,” YSU President David C. Sweet said. “His commitment to the university and its students is second to none.”

Fahey said he is honored to accept the position.

“I love working with YSU students, so I am excited about this new opportunity,” Fahey said. “The Division of Student Affairs has so many talented and dedicated professionals. It is an honor to be asked to lead them. I am looking forward to helping Dr. Anderson implement her vision for the future.”

A native of Buffalo, N.Y., Fahey earned a bachelor’s degree from Dickinson College in 1978 and a master’s degree in education from YSU in 1986.

He came to YSU in 1980 as coordinator of student activities. In 1989, he became director of Housing Services, and, in 2002, was named director of auxiliary services, overseeing the university bookstore, Kilcawley Center, housing services, student health services and contracted services such as food services and document management. In 2006, he was named executive director of student services and ombudsman, serving as an advocate for students, helping them resolve concerns and problems that they may encounter at the university.

Fahey received the YSU Distinguished Service Award in 1989 and 2001.
