Mooney holds off Boardman, 3-1, in softball


BOARDMAN

Junior Jamie Clausen scattered three hits and kept Boardman at bay as Cardinal Mooney’s softball team defeated the Spartans, 3-1, on Wednesday.

The Cardinals rallied behind senior Shayla DeCapita. Her leadoff home run in the fourth tied the game. Then in the bottom of the sixth, DeCapita hit a one-out double, and moved to third on Macy Ucchino’s bunt single. Christina Hrehor’s infield hit loaded the bases, and DeCapita raced home on Chrissy Porter’s RBI grounder. Clausen then singled to account for the final margin.

Girard 6, Warren JFK 2

GIRARD

Bryanna Jay tripled and Melissa Weitzman and Chelsea Guerrieri doubled for the Indians (2-1). Girard led 3-2 in the second inning then scored three times in the sixth. Kayla Powell tripled for the Eagles.

Niles 10, Warren Harding 0

WARREN

Aubrey Hale threw a one-hitter with 15 strikeouts.

Hale drove in three runs while Lindsey Dodgson had three hits including two doubles and two RBIs. Megan McDermott, Sammy Melius and Sammy Ramer each had two hits.

South Range 3, Mineral Ridge 0

NORTH LIMA

Carly DeRose pitched six innings, striking out seven, to pick up the win. Laura Biroschak made a diving catch in right field, then doubled a runner off second to end a Mineral Ridge (0-2) rally. Biroschak also had two singles, while Madison Yanek and Emily Seman hit doubles for South Range (2-0).

Lakeview 2, Newton Falls 1

NEWTON FALLS

Kim Lane struck out four and scattered seven hits for Lakeview (2-0). Raelynn Burns hit a double for the Bulldogs, who scored both runs in the top of the seventh inning. Bailey Shade and Abby Harrah had two hits each for Newton Falls (0-2). One of Harrah’s was a double. Shade also struck out 12 as the Tigers’ pitcher.

Jackson-Milton 11, Leetonia 0

LEETONIA

Maddie Griffith had two doubles and a single to help the Blue Jays get past the Bears to start the season. But pitcher Lindsey Knipp (1-0) had 12 strikeouts and allowed only two hits. Catcher Cat Keckt added two hits, including a triple.

Howland 4, Fitch 1

HOWLAND

Tori McCormick’s bases-loaded double scored three runs as the Tigers were able to score four in the fifth inning and improve to 2-0 to begin the year. Pitcher Hayley Marchio (2-0) had six strikeouts and one walk, surrendering only four hits.

Liberty 7, Brookfield 0

BROOKFIELD

Alli House had a single, triple and two RBIs to help the Leopards past the Warriors. House also struck out six batters and walked only one.

Western Reserve 15, Sebring 3

The Blue Devils (2-0) collected 18 hits and scored eight times in the seventh inning.
