McDONALD

The board of education approved new two-year contracts for the high school and elementary school principals at their current salaries.

The board rehired high school principal Gary Carkido, a McDonald resident, under a new two-year contract from Aug. 1 to July 31, 2012, at his current annual salary of $71,750.

Maggie Kowach, a Warren resident, also was rehired under a two-year contract through July 31, 2012, as Roosevelt Elementary school principal at $68,295.

The board took the action Wednesday night.

Medical, dental and vision-care coverage for the administrators has been altered under the new contracts, and they will be required to make a larger co-pay for their health coverage, treasurer Brian Stidham said.

Co-insurance on the Preferred Provider Option offered a change to 90-percent employer and 10-percent employee contribution instead of the current 95-percent to 5-percent co-pay plan.

Dental and vision now have no co-pay, but that will change to an 80-percent employer and 20-percent employee contribution.

The board also has posted the position of part-time superintendent for the district. It took the action after the State Finance and Planning Commission amended the district’s financial recovery plan in March to ask the state superintendent to approve a part-time superintendent and a full-time elementary principal for McDonald schools.

The original plan was for a full-time superintendent who also would serve as elementary school principal.

Current superintendent Michael Wasser has resigned effective July 31.
